Making art for me is a way of interacting with the world and, in the
process, to discover deeper truths. I am continuously in flux as
the world changes, demanding that I too change. As I adapt to
transformations that occur outwardly, I respond with an inner shift in
vision and my artwork reflects these changes. Searching for
meaning beneath the surface requires a deeper kind of looking. It
is this quest that keeps me in the process of creating.
In the past, I have used the image of the human face as a vehicle to
discover how life impacts the "self". At other times,
being provoked by world events, I was interested in the nature of
duality. How can the "truth" wear so many
disguises. How can two identical looking images change because of
the narrative that is created regarding its "truth".
Perception is distorted; the eye is deceived.
Most recently, I have left the image of the human form for a more
primitive image, that of rocks and stones. I have become absorbed
with the different symbolic structures that can be created by the
repetition of a single form. Each composition becomes symbolic to
me of endurance and strength in spite of the chaos of the outside world,
places to hide to remain "safe". Each narrative sheds
light on a different outcome when faced with external destruction.
